Hi,

I'm using dnn 4.6 for a client of mine. Last week he was working in the dnn portal (portal was setup propperly a few months ago and working fine)... he forgot to log out and a few hours later he wanted to login, the site isn't working. He can't reach it.

First i got this standard asp.net error message, but then i turned off the customerrors and a got a more detailed information: system out of memory execption... . I can't access the portal, not the front as the admin, the site is unavailable. Is there a way to reset the portal without losing data? Or could this be the hosting?

Or what else could be wrong? Can i do?

Best regards,

Thomas

There could be a number of things leading to this behavior.  I would begin by getting the web host involved as soon as possible.

In addition, it wouldn't be a bad idea to clear out the event log.  If you still have the ability to run a query against the database, run the following query:

DELETE FROM [dbo].[EventLog] WHERE [LogCreateDate] > GETDATE() - 1

However, I would ammend my example to reflect the correct number of days ago that this problem began. If it was yesterday, leave it as it is, otherwise increment by one for each day further in the past.  This way, if there are any clues to the original problem, you might be able to see them still in the EventLog.

Hi,

The webhost doesn't know/sees what the problem is, only when you try to reach the url, the IIS is consuming a lot of memory... . How can i get this website back online without losing any data? Because with a new installation, the db would be reinstalled i guess... . My client has put a lot of work into it, so they really don't want to loose it.

Is their another way to see what's wrong? Maybe my hostingpartner doesn't know where to look? maybe a process isn't proper killed or something... i don't know?

thx,

Thomas

This could be due to any other asp.net program on the same web server.  You can try viewing the server via task manager and killing the aspnet_wp process.

Is the "system out of memory" error constant still?  Are there any other errors passed back you?  Your host certainly should know how to troubleshoot the problem.  If they don't, get a back-up of your site files, and your database and host elsewhere.  They are not worth your time or money.

It is fairly simple to troubleshoot performance issues on most web servers.  The first thing to do is to see what else is running that is consuming resources.  As it was already mentioned, the first tool to check might be the Task Manager.  Go to the processes tab and sort by memory.  See what is consuming the most memory.  All of the following steps would be directly dependant on what that application(s) is/are.
