Brand new to DNN. Long time programmer/web person, but not so good on network stuff. Trying to install DNN 4.8 on my local XP Pro machine so I can practice. IIS had not been installed on my machine, so I added that. Have Framework 2.0 SP1, 3.0 SP1 and 3.5, according to Add&Remove. However, when I tried to add the ASPNET user, it cannot find it. It did take the Network Service user, but consistently can't find the ASPNET user, and when I tried to continue the various installs, including SQL Server Express, etc, it was looking for that user and wouldn't let me continue without it. And yes, I'm an admin on my machine.

I'm shaky on this stuff as noted, so I'm not sure now what to try. I was following the install video here, but once I couldn't find the user, I had to abandon it :(

TIA

I'm not sure what advice I can offer other than to suggest you uninstall and reinstall the .net framework as it appears something's gone wrong in the install.

But shouldn't it have put it there when I installed 3.5? Also, on a related note, I was able to uninstall 1.1 successfully, but when I tried to uninstall 2.0, it gave me an error message about it being tied to some other application(s). Sorry don't have it in front of me. Since I also have 3.0 and now 3.5, do I still even NEED the earlier versions? Aren't they supposed to be cumulative? And how can I find out what app 2.0 is attached to? It didn't give the name. If I leave 2.0 out there, and uninstall/reinstall 3.0/3.5, would that be sufficient, do you think?

yes it should have been there, thats why i suspect an installation problem. As to what application is required, asp.net 3.0 is really just a feature pack with 3 main assemblies that add to the asp.net 2.0 stack, so it's .net 3.0 which is reliant on .net 2.0. If I was you I would uninstall all the .net versions, reboot your machine and then only install .net 3.5 (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=333325FD-AE52-4E35-B531-508D977D32A6&displaylang=en)- it is additive so will install .net 2.0 (plus service pack), .net 3.0 and .net 3.5. You will not need .net 1.1, it's a legacy version now.

Is this a 64 bit version of XP by any chance?  XP 64 is actually IIS 6.
