Okay, we spent a few months building up a great website on the laptop as a local install (XP PRO, SQL Express, DNN 4.07) and have registered a domain for it (www.northstarcamaroclub.net).  I have done a new DNN 4.7 install on the server (with great pain, but it is working now), and also have FTP'd the directory from the laptop up to the server in a folder under the root.  Now that I finally have a basic, clean install fo DNN working, what do I have to do to get the site imported?  The site is in portal 0 and portal 1 of the local install.  Can I just copy and paste the relevent info, or is that wishful thinking?  I don't want to start from scratch, and the hosting site doesn't seem to be very well versed in DNN.  If there is a step by step process to getting this up, please let me know.  Thanks for any help, I would really like to have this up and running real soon.

Anyone have any thoughts on this at all?  I know it has been mentioned before that it is pretty easy to do, but it turns out it isn't easy for me.  Can I just copy the folders with the modules and the portals over on the clean install?  What is the best way to get the site we built up running on our host server???

It is farily easy to do.  I actually have two articles about it, one for backup and restore on my website...http://www.mitchelsellers.com

Basically the process would be like this.

First login to your local site and add a portal alias for the production url

Second backup your local database and files.

Third have your hosting provider restore your database backup to the production site

Fourth, modify your connection strings to point to their database server.

Fifth, Upload your site to the production site via FTP!

You make that sound so simple!  I think I have wasted a lot of time and money trying to figure it out myself ($5 every time they mess with the db!).  I will try again!

Oh, and when I update the alias on the local, do I have to FTP everything again?  It takes forever to upload everything, so if I only have to move a few files, that would be easier.

Mitch,

Before I spend another $5 restoring the database again, do I put my DNN files directly in the root directory (ftp:northstarcamaroclub.net) or in a folder like I did before (which would be ftp:northstarcamaroclub.net/DNN_4_7).  I added the aliases and it only changed a few files (the mdf files from express)  I uploaded them, and I made a backup of the database.  Also, since I had made a clean install of 4.7, I copied its web.config file, and compared it to the config file from the local.  I changed the database strings to match.  Do I need to change the machine keys?  Thanks for the help, sorry that I am such an internet dummy, I don't know where I lost the bubble on computers, I guess I just never advanced much from the DOS days...
