Hi,  After setting up IIS and a SQL 2005 database I preformed the initial config of accounts and modules.  When I clicked the link to go to the live site this happened:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Source Error:

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

Stack Trace:

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
DotNetNuke.UI.Skins.SkinDefaults..ctor(SkinDefaultType DefaultType) +224
DotNetNuke.Common.Globals.get_DefaultSkin() +50
DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings.GetPortalSettings(Int32 TabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +3095
DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewriteModule.OnBeginRequest(Object s, EventArgs e) +2463
System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() +79
System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +176

I believe this may be something to do with the DotNetNuke.config file which I had to copy out of the config directory and into the root.  Can anyone advise me on how to resolve this?

Many Thanks in Advance.

This issue is now resolved.  I did the following:

  • I stopped the application in IIS 7.0.
  • Deleted the contents of the root directory.
  • I extracted the install files to the root directory again.
  • I set up a fresh SQL Server database
  • I altered the connection string in the web.config file
  • Completed the installation again.
  • Hey presto, it worked.

A little like killing a fly with a cannon, but as it did get me up and running I don't mind.
