To make a long story short:

  • Source: core framework + modules + source code (most  probably you won't need it)
  • Install package: core framework + modules (most probably what you need to install remote)
  • Install wizard: is the wizard that guides you through the setup process
  • Upgrade: only core framework to upgrade installations.
  • Starterkit: installs on Viual Studio or Express editions a template to start a project locally (most probably what you need to install locally)

So the question is: are you planning to install locally or remote?

  • if you just want to install DotNetNuke to run a portal, use the install package
  • if you want to have a look into the source code, use source package
  • if you want to develop modules using VWD, use the starter kit.

Locally means on your desktop PC. Remotely means to install it on another machine, usually a server within your network or a hosting provider on the Internet.
