I followed the starter kit and it installed everything for me but when it finished and it loaded the home page, I got the following error:
Line 84:
Line 85: 'Determine the Upgrade status and redirect to Install.aspx
Line 86: Select Case GetUpgradeStatus()
Line 87: Case Globals.UpgradeStatus.Install, Globals.UpgradeStatus.Upgrade
Line 88: If AutoUpgrade Then

Paul,

I wish I could move your post, since it does not belong in this thread. There are some suggestions you make that are useful and some others aren't. Nothing can substitute the experience of reading the documentation. With each release I skim the documentation to look for new stuff.

I disagree with the first assumption that since it involves IIS and SQL the Core Team should document how to do stuff in those tools. That's the reason TechNet and MSDN exist and such information is not particular to DNN. So my answer to that is, you must do your homework, learn what all those terms are about.

I agree with separating the documentation completely for each releeased version (DNN3 vs DNN4), it does add to the confusion.

With the rest of your post, I suggest you repost under a new thread so others read the comments. Some members of the Core Team will review them I'm sure and use it as fedback.

I'm using VWD 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express and trying to install DNN 4.0.2.  I have followed your advise and downloaded the Documents Zip and began on page 27 of the Installation Guide and followed the instruction creating a File System DNN project and completed the instructions on the Welcome page.  When I execute Step 6 the build completes and is successful my Internet Explorer open about:blank and just sits there.  Thinking it might be my computer running alittle slow I let it sit there for an hour and nothing happens.

What do you recommend?

Your internet explorer is preventing the web server (that came with Visual Web Developer Express) from displaying the page it wants to. In Internet Explorer, under "Tools", then "Internet Options", clikc the "General" tab, and under "Home Page" section click the "Use Default" button.

This may help.

Actually you probably just did a build not a build and debug. See the directions here:
