I'm using VWD 2005 Express and SQL Server 2005 Express and trying to install DNN 4.0.2.  I have followed your advise and downloaded the Documents Zip and began on page 27 of the Installation Guide and followed the instruction creating a File System DNN project and completed the instructions on the Welcome page.  When I execute Step 6 the build completes and is successful my Internet Explorer open about:blank and just sits there.  Thinking it might be my computer running alittle slow I let it sit there for an hour and nothing happens.

What do you recommend?

Did that and I get this.

DotNetNuke Upgrade Error

The Assembly Version ( [ASSEMBLYVERSION] ) does not match the Database Version ( [DATABASEVERSION] )

ERROR: Could not connect to database.

The stored procedure 'dbo.GetPortalAliasByPortalID' doesn't exist.

Generally when I see this it is one of a couple of things.  First, the connection string is incorrect. In this situation, just fix the connection string. Second, sometimes the install will bomb because of a bad connection string or other and you find yourself with a none existent database or a half crocked on and the web.config has a install date so DNN assumes that the install was successful.  In this case you can verify the connection string, remove the install date, and browse the site to kick off the install.

I managed to get my nuke installed on XP and SQLServerExpress by running the starter kit and then I gave the NETWORK SERVICE and ASPNET users full control over the virtual directory. Then, I followed the instructions on the welcome page and not the instructions in the DotNetNuke Docs folder. I hope that if you try that, it will work for you as well. It was very annoying while trying to get it installed but the product is worth the effort, stick it out.
