Hello!

I'm hoping someone can help me. I'm completely new to DNN and I've been asked to move a friends DNN website from one host to another. (I didn't realize it was a DNN Site...just thought this was going to be a simple FTP process)...joke's on me! :)

Anyway, I'm fairly proficient at making my way around, so I'm just looking for someone to walk me through the install steps that seem completely foreign to me. I've built a number of static websites and am fairly familiar with Joomla, etc. but Windows based sites and this DNN thing has me in a tailspin.

So, I have my friends site FTP'd to my local computer. I have an account set up on a Windows server that's remotely hosted by their new hosting company.

I've upload all website files and then deleted them because I realizing I have to perform an actual install first, maybe I'm wrong. Their website was installed in December of 06' so I thought it wise to try and install DNN 3.3.7 (since it was the only version out then, and newer versions may give me more trouble, so I thought it wise not to upgrade...because all I need to do is get this site up.)

On my remote host, I've unzipped and FTP ALL DNN 3.3.7 INSTALL files...not source files, to the root directory. Then I tried creating the Virtual Directory, (as per the install manual) but in the Hosting Control Panel, I'm getting an error that says:

"Failed to create Web Directory
You can't change settings on this domain, because Content Move has been started"

Man, WHAT DOES THAT MEAN?

Now I think about it, I'd be willing to pay someone to simply install this app and configure it so I can get this site up. But like I said, I'm doing it for a friend and I'm not looking to pay a lot of money.

Can ANYONE give me any direction?

I'm about to throw the White Flag!

Thanks!

Eoln <End Of LiNe> :)

That's a question for your host, it's not a DNN error.  Plus, you copied the install files to the root, then created a virtual folder.  Don't.  Either install from the root or copy the files to the virtual directory/subfolder and install from the virtual directory/subfolder.

Thanks for the response Jeff!

I'll check that error with my host and see what they can do. Could that error be because I DID copy the install files to the root and tried to create a virtual folder? I suppose that too could be a question for my host.

As far as the install goes, since I have copied all the files into the root, how do I install it? I would think there would be a file I could reach from my browser... correct?

Would it be best to create a subfolder/virtual directory and install it from there instead? I guess I don't understand what the point of the subfolder is.

Any further input you could provide would be most helpful.

Thanks Again!

Read the documentation.  It tells everything you need to know about installing.  Basically, configure SQL access, configure file/folder permissions, configure the web.config for your SQL connection string and then browse to the site.
