Can someone start me in the correct direction.  I am trying to setup a procedure where I can install DNN locally.  Develop/Debug and then Deploy to my active server.
Locally I am running Vista/VS2008/SQLexpr - all latest of everything.

I do the Quick DNN install from the template using the local database file.  All is well and good.  It installs correctly, I can make changes etc.
I then FTP the entire contents to the Win2003/SQLExp server.

When I access the site: http://www.comeandget.us  I get a

This site is currently Unavailable

error.

Any help would be appreciated.  I have looked at the SQL connection strings, but since I am using the defaults all around they look ok to me.

Thanks in advance.

I have worked on this issue all day today.  Still have not made much progress.  Why does microsoft make things so hard?

On My Local Machine.

  • I can get DNN to install using the AUTO install (which uses the attached MSSQL Express DB) no problems.
  • I can not get DNN to do a typical install.
    • I make a SQL database OK
    • I get the test DB connection screen, do check connection get OK
    • Go to the next screen (install scripts) nothing happens, the red update bar goes round and around
I do get an error in the JAVA script if I turn debuggning on.

On my Server

  • I cannot get Auto Install to work.
  • I can get a typical install to work. I have a working procedure to create a SQL database, set all the priveledges
  • If I bulk copy the Auto installed site from my development machine to my server I get the message I previously provided.

I know there is lots here.  I either need to be able to get past the install on the local machine allowing me create a seperate SQL database, since I know how to do this on the webserver, or I need to know why attached local database on my remote server does not work and how to fix it.

Any suggestions?

You will have to get into the database table on the server, PortalAlias, I think is the name, and change the Alias field to match your server....its probably pointing to localhost........

Ran into that last week moving from my development system to the server, also some path problems with images.......had to edit the path's once I got it to the server......UGH.

Hi Cagus,

I ran into the same problems with the typical install, Database scripts not running. I got around that by going to the Install directory and setting the install.aspx as the start page and running the project. The database scripts will run and everything is happy again.

Haven't had the time to figure out what's wrong with the install code but I was getting the same javascript error that you are seeing.......not enough hours in the day!

I found a good video tutorial on setting up the permissions http://www.mitchelsellers.com/VideoTutorials/InstallingDotNetNuke455VideoTutorial/tabid/263/Default.aspx , you'll need to register, no fee's!

Regards, Burl

Wow,

What a nightmare.  Microsoft can certainly make life hard!  Hats off the the DNN guys for making it all work as well as it does.  I have finally been beaten into submission.  I have a method of creating websites on both local and hosted machine now.  I don't have a way to move databases back and forth.  So I have decided that the design process it create modules and skins on the local machine to be packaged up for deployment on the servers.  All content goes on the server only.  Maybe that is obvious to everyone else.  I had a fantasy of having mirror machines, but the lack of database replication makes it way to time consuming, cumbersome and accident prone.

Thanks all for getting me this far.

Cagus
