Sebastian,

The module in question is not setup to be installed like a install version.

It gives errors, ex:

"File specified in the dnn could not be found in the zip file: _________.dll" then it fails.

The module developer site recommends a link, it's about debugging 3rd party modules, and it recommends using some code that a) is from 2005 and b) is no longer available.

So I'm thinking there must be some current approach that works??

before doing major modifications, I also suggest to have a look at the DNN module developement tutorials at dotnetnuke.adefwebserver.com

sorry, I don't understand. 3rd party modules are often simple zip the module folder as source version, simply unzip the files into the /desktopmodules/[modulename] folder and try again
