I'm about to upgrade from DotNetNuke 4.3.6 to DotNetNuke 4.8.2 and I'm apprehensive about loosing data or breaking the application. Does anyone have some upgrade tips or know of an upgrade tool to simplify the process?

Thanks-

Hi,

The most important upgrade tip (upgrade command) is BACKUP! Make a complete copy of your file system. Make a full back up of your database. Copy your web.config again. Save them all somewhere very very safe.

Then and only then, should you proceed to perform any kind of upgrade to your site.

Also, it is very much advised to run through the process on a test site first before you do it in production.

You may find this resource helpful when upgrading: Upgrading to DotNetNuke 4.8.2 from 4.x

Take care,

Excellent advice Ian! I did indeed make a complete back-up of the database as well as the DotNetNuke directory, however I'll also back-up the web.config.

I was considering making the update on production but you've talked me out of it. I'll make a copy of the site in my virtual environment and upgrade there first.

I was hoping there was an upgrade tool available for DNN version upgrades, much like the module update tool, but It doesn’t sound like there’s one out there.

Thanks for the advice and quick response!

Thanks,
Jesus-

Hey Jesus,

You're welcome! And as far as the upgrade tool goes -- If there is an upgrade tool out there -- I'd still do that in a testing environment first!

Take care,

Ian

Like the directions stated, I made backups then overwrote all the files. Then I modified the web config as stated in those directions. I didn't run the install locally, instead a ran it on the server because I dont have IIS on my PC.

The install got a few errors (I should have wrote them down), something about SQL Schema.

After it finished I was left with this message on all sites and the install page:

Unauthorized Access Error

Error Details

File C:\Sites\Single31\site21\webroot\Portals\_default\\Logs\LogFailures.xml.resources
Error   Access to the path 'C:\Sites\Single31\site21\webroot\Portals\_default\Logs\LogFailures.xml.resources' is denied. The Windows User Account listed below must have Read/Write Privileges to this path.
