Hello,

I'm getting the following when attempting to install DNN 4.8.3 (this is on the Install Wizard page after entering in DB info and getting a positive DB connection test):

Installing Database - Version 4.4.0...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.4.1...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.5.0...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.5.1...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.5.2...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.5.3...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.5.4...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.5.5...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.6.0...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.6.1...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.6.2...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.7.0...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.8.0...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.8.1...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.8.2...Success
Upgrading Database to Version 4.8.3...FAILURE 400 - Access to the path 'c:\inetpub\wwwroot\dnn\Portals\_default\03.00.08.txt' is denied.

I've given full permissions to Network Service and ASPNET to the root web folder and subfolders.  The file does exist.  Anyone encounter and resolve this?

Environment:

  • Windows XP SP2
  • IIS 5.1
  • simple file sharing DISABLED
  • Network Service and ASPNET full permission at dnn portal root
  • SQL Server Express with TCP/NP enabled, Mixed Auth mode

it appears you don't have the correct permissions. After installing the various files and database schema scripts are ran in succession, code attempts to delete various *.config and *.txt files to ensure that hackers can't use their version numbering to profile your site (see http://www.dotnetnuke.com/News/SecurityPolicy/SecurityBulletinno14/tabid/1159/Default.aspx for why and a manual workaround). On XP, the 2 users you need to grant permissions to are the ASPNET user and the IUSR_machinename users, not network service (it's used for windows 2003/vista/2008)

Same probs ..

I'm using win2k3 server.. DNN4.4

In my case, assigning "modify" privilege to NETWORK SERVICE solve all mambo-jumbo error msg.

This feature was coded quite badly.  I've looked at the code and it makes no attempt to gracefully recover from any error such as the file not existing or the file not having the correct permissions.  As a result the entire install stops completely, even though it was otherwise successful.  This is not a good reason to stop the install.

The deletion of these files is useful for stopping someone from finding out your DNN version.  BUT it needs to be coded better, and if for whatever reason the file can not be deleted, this should not stop the installation process.  If they can not be deleted then just show a warning message and keep going.

There might be room for improvements, but IMHO if there is an issue during installation, it is best to stop the process and get the issue corrected and installation restarted, instead of continuing with a risk of running a corrupted installation.
