OK this is going to be unbelievable to some of you.  I still have a dotnetnuke site running DotNetNuke 1.0.10.  I want to upgrade this site to the latest security release of 4.8.3.  Anyone want to share the best upgrade path to take?  DO not ask me why this site is still on such an old release.  I was just given this site to manage.  :-(  Thanks for any help!

Shawn,

I believe it is possible, though I haven't done an upgrade of 1.0* in quite a while.

I would start by doing the following

Backup your site and database, restore this backup on a test instance.

Practice the upgrade on this test instance. Here's the path I would take

Upgrade to 2.1.2

Upgrade to 3.3.7

Upgrade to 4.8.3

If that doesn't work you might have to go through a few other versions along the way, such as 3.3.7 to 4.4.1, then 4.8.3?

Be prepared to try it a few times for sure!

I highly recommend adding 4.4.1 as a stop between 3.3.7 and 4.8.3.  In all of my 2.x or older upgrades I have had to make that stop for one reason or another.

Hey Chris I downloaded 2.1.2 but there is not a upgrade package.  Do I just replace the files (except web.config) in my 1.x version?  I am not sure what you run after doing that to upgrade.  Sorry about this as I am fairly new to DNN.

For what you're doing you won't be using an upgrade package at all, imho.

You'll most likely need to copy values from the old web.config, to the new web.config on each of your upgrades. The main values are

connection string (there might be multiple)

machinekey (probably won't come into play until 2.*)

objectqualifier (if defined, if not you're golden)

databaseowner (if something other than DBO you'll need to copy this each time)
