Upon doing a search the Upgrade error listed below has been seen several times in this forum when upgrading to a few different releases of DNN v4, however, I have not seen an answer yet on what could be causing the issue. Have not noticed any symptoms of a problem yet, and I can load the portal by rebrowsing to it after the error is displayed - but the error is concerning. DNN Upgrade from 04.08.02 to 04.08.03 error. Once the files were overwritten and the new web.config file for v.4.8.3 updated with 1.) the sql connection strings (2 of them) and 2.) both the validation and decryption keys were replaced. I also turned on debugging to see what the error was - results below. ******************************************* Upgrading DotNetNuke Current Assembly Version: 04.08.03 Current Database Version: 04.08.02 Upgrade Status Report 00:00:00.015 - Upgrading to Version: 4.8.3 00:00:00.109 - Executing Script: 04.08.03.SqlDataProvider Success 00:00:00.265 - Performing General Upgrades -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Server Error in '/portal' Application. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Data at the root level is invalid. since DNN 4.6.0 you do not need to adopt web.config file manually - this shall prevent issues during upgrade. I am not sure, what caused your issue, did you check file system permissions for all files?

Thanks, Sebastian.  The changes to web.config did not seem to be my problem.  I did find a workaround that got my installation working just fine though.

I started looking into the problem from the resourcesinstaller perspective since this is where the code errored out.

To resolve the issue if I remove any files with the .resources extension from the Install\ subdirectories the upgrade works without a hitch.  I removed any uninstalled modules (.resources files) from the Install\Module directory and also removed any uninstalled authentication providers from the Install\Package directory.  Once these directories were cleared out the upgrade ran just fine.

Not sure if this is an bug in the installresources code or what.

I have had some site fail on upgrade because NETWORK SERVICE did not have read and write permission to every file in the DotNetNuke site. This is odd because I am sure I had to have that to install the site in the first place. Anyway I always check that before doing an upgrade.
