Hi there,

I am currently having issues setting up a new install of DotNetNuke using the latest version.  The odd thing is that it only happens when I am using IIS (version 5.1) to host it; if I run it using Visual Web Developer 2008, it works just fine.  Here are my steps:

  1. I download the Install version, and unzip it in a directory
  2. I create a Virtual Directory called "DNNFresh" in IIS that points to the install.  The default document is set to Default.aspx and I have given the virtual directory executable permission.  I have also ensured that it is running ASP.NET 2.0.
  3. I open a web browser and go to the URL http://localhost/DNNFresh

At this point, I get a runtime error.  If I enable debug mode in web.config, I see that the error happens at line 103 of Global.asax:

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.
Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Source Error:

Line 101:
Line 102: 'run schedule if in Request mode
Line 103: Initialize.RunSchedule(Request)
Line 104:
Line 105: End Sub

Like I said, if I run the same website from within Visual Web Developer, I get no errors, so this must be a configuration issue in IIS.  Any ideas?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Hehe, looks like I have found the source of the issue after all.  It was because I had installed IIS after installing the .NET Framework 2.0.  For those having similar problems, here is the solution:

Open a command prompt, and go to C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727 (or whichever minor version of the .NET Framework you have installed)

Run the command "aspnet_regiis.exe -i" without the double quotes.

Problem solved!  Sorry for the bother :-)
