I have tried both versions available for download and none of them work. Whenever I try to go to http://localhost/DotNetNuke to begin the installation, Firefox asks me if I want to download a file of type application/octet stream. In IE6, it only displays the following, in full coded format:

---------------------------------------------------------

<%@ Page Language="vb" AutoEventWireup="false" Explicit="True" Inherits="DotNetNuke.Framework.DefaultPage" CodeFile="Default.aspx.vb" %>
<%@ Register TagPrefix="dnn" Namespace="DotNetNuke.Common.Controls" Assembly="DotNetNuke" %>

 <%=LanguageCode%>>

-----------------------------
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

that's the aspx page passed as text i.e. it's not being processed. This means that you either don't have the .net 2.0 framework installed (download from http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=0856EACB-4362-4B0D-8EDD-AAB15C5E04F5&displaylang=en ) or else you install the .net framework first, then IIS - this means the .net extensions are not mapped (see http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306005 for instructions on using aspnet_regiis -i to fix it)
