I've searched and read... and read and read, but can't find a solution for this.

I'm trying to install 4.08.04 on a server, using the Install kit.

I'm running Windows Server 2003 with IIS 6 and SQLExpress.

I extracted the install kit to a folder outside of inetpub/wwwroot and set it up in IIS as a virtual directory.

This root folder has Full Control permissions for NETWORK SERVICE and ASPNET - I've done the "Replace permission entries on all child objects..." option so, while I've not checked the permissions for each file and sub directory, I'm fairly sure they are correct.

My ASP.NET version in ISS is 2.0.50727

I was able to run install.aspx - the install process appeared to run successfully, so I don't think there is an issue with ASP.NET
(however, when I run aspnet_regiis - i, as has been suggested in other posts, I get a message saying "The error indicates that IIS is in 64 bit mode, while this application is a 32 bit application and thus not compatible." - but like I said, ASP.NET seems to be working)

After the install, when I try to open http://localhost/dotnetnuke/default.aspx I get the message "You are not authorized to view this page". If I turn "Show Friendly HTTP Error Messages" off in IE, the error says "Directory Listing Denied. This Virtual Directory does not allow contents to be listed".

I do have "Enable default content page" checked in IIS, and have Default.aspx at the top of the list.

From the message it appears that default.aspx might be redirecting to another directory that might not have a default page, thus it's trying to list the contents.

I am able to open other files within that base directory, like logo.gif. I also created a test.aspx page and was able to open it from that directory.

Any ideas on what this might be?

TIA,

Mike

Try the following:

  1. Open IIS
  2. Expand the Websites object
  3. Expand the website to reveal the vdir you created
  4. Right click the vdir and select Properties
  5. Click the Documents tab
  6. Make sure default.aspx is in the list
  7. If not in list add it
  8. Click Apply

Now try browsing the site and see if it works.

If not, return to IIS and do the following:

  1. Open IIS
  2. Expand the Websites object
  3. Expand the website to reveal the vdir you created
  4. Right click the vdir and select Properties
  5. Go to the ASP.Net tab
  6. Make sure the version is set to 2.xxx
  7. If not, change it to 2.xxx
  8. Click Apply
  9. Go to the Virtual Directory tab (or Home Directory if this is a vweb)
  10. In the Applications Setting section make sure you see the remove button
  11. If you do not you should see a Create button, click it
  12. If you see the Remove button, click it, Apply, and then Create Apply
  13. Click Apply

Again try browsing the site.

If you still cannot bring up the site try the following:

  1. Open Windows Explorer
  2. Go to where your DNN install is
  3. right click the DNN root folder and select Properties
  4. Verify the following permission
    1. Administrators FC
    2. System FC
    3. ASP.Net FC
    4. iis_wp FC
    5. Network Sevice FC
    6. IUSR_MachineName RX
    7. IWam_MachineName RWX
    8. Users RX
  5. Select to replay on all children and Click Apply

Try the site again, if this fails I am at a loss.

I hope this helps

Robert,

Thanks for your reply. The first two items appeared to be fine, but I was missing permissions on my DNN root folder for IUSER_xxx, IWAM_xxx and IIS_WPG. I added these. I then called up default.aspx again. Instead of the error, it sat there for a few minutes then redirected to dotnetnuke\install\ and I got the You are not authorized.../Directory Listing Denied error again. (When I was getting the error before, the address bar still contained dotnetnuke\default.aspx - now it contains dotnetnuke\install\ with no file name). I had already run install.aspx successfully, but I went ahead and added install.aspx to the folder name in the address bar. The browser returns a completely blank page. In the source there is a minimal header then <body></body>. When I re-enter default.aspx in the address bar, it returns to dotnetnuke\install\ and gives the Directory Listing Denied error.

The only other .aspx file I see in \Install\ is InstallWizard.aspx. When I load that page I get the message that DotNetNuke is already installed on this system.

If default.aspx isn't redirecting right - any idea what page I can manually load to continue with the next step of the process after install.aspx?

Thanks,

Mike

I wonder if the install is bad because of the permissions.

Can you try a fress install with the configurations I listed and see if that works?
