I’m hosting my DNN web on www.3essentials.com and have had great support so far. I want to upgrade to 4.9.0 (from 4.8.0) and have a dilemma. 3essentials will do a clean install of DNN for you; however, for an upgrade they provide upgrade tips/guides but basically refer you to DotNetNuke for upgrade instructions.

Now, following Mitchel Sellers’ documentation on “Upgrade to DNN 4.9.0 from 4.6.2 or Later”:

“To perform an upgrade from 4.6.2 or later to 4.9.0 you may simply download the UPGRADE package for the 4.9.0 version of DotNetNuke from the DotNetNuke.com website.  You MUST use the upgrade package for this process.  Once you have downloaded the package, simply unzip it over your existing DNN installation.  This will update all DotNetNuke core files and prepare you to install the upgrade.”

I use Filezilla to “interact” with my 3essetials FTP host. How do I “simply unzip it (the 4.9.0 Upgrade) over the existing DNN installation”?

Thanks in advance…

You'll want to unzip the upgrade package into a folder locally, and then FTP those files over your website.

First, make sure you backup the website before you do this.

Second, you may want to redirect users to a backup of your site on another server, if available, while you upgrade.  Otherwise, you can add an html page to your site called app_offline.htm to your site, and this will be displayed whenever people try to access your site, so that they don't see things broken during the upgrade process.

Hope that helps,

I've upgraded to 4.9 version and then the problems started. Instead of displaying default.aspx page as start page, sometimes happens that it loads Install/UnderConstruction.html page. Where did I go wrong?

Is it enough to download Upgrade package od 4.9 and overwrite existing files and folders or should I've changed web.config also for some setting?

Fortunatelly, I have backup of 4.8.2 version.

Thanx in advance!

Well, just did what you said...  When so smoothly I was convinced that something was wrong.  Logged on as host and checked the version number to be certain...says I've got 04.09.00!

Thanks...was it really supposed to be that simple?  No editing web.config, default.css, etc?

It's really that simple.  Since 4.6.0, you don't need to touch the web.config, which was really the only manual step left in the upgrade process.  I'm glad that it went so smoothly for you.

Enjoy!
