Hi, We installed DNN on our production machine and were not able to sent smtp because our McAfee virusscanner was blocking access to our mail server. The virusscanner was installed by our sysadmin. I have never liked these virusscanners in the first place because they have done more harm than good for me. Putting my personal preferences apart I would like to know if anyone would have recommendations on installing virus scanners on a locked down webserver. The biggest vulnerabilities will come from sql injection x-site scripting, and the like. The virusscanner will be of no help in these cases. So I would recommend just to focus on having the latest patches installed, limiting the privileges to the absolute minimum, conducting a hacker attack analysis, etc. No need for a virusscanner or if you want to use one then schedule a full scan using the Windows Scheduler service.

This really isn't a DNN question, however I do recommend the TrendMicro series of antivirus products as they cover every area and intigrate well with pretty much every use case scenario, it is true "back office" software - although it can take a while to get up to speed.

Virusscanners are unfortunately a very necessary evil... unless you are really into gambling..

Marc,

If your SysAdmin installed a virus scanner then it is most likely a corporate policy.  Trying to work around it can result in you "flipping burgers" for a living next week.  You should work with your SysAdmin to configure McAfee to allow smtp to your mail server to conform with your corporate policy.  Also, I am guessing you have never managed a server before.

Here is another product that contains anti-virus and all the tools that should be on every server.
Blink Professional - eEye Digital

I cannot stress enough, do not try to work around your SysAdmin.

Mikez,

You are completely missing the point. I always work with IT system administration and application management and I not saying I do not want to use a virusscanner. The problem is that these programs do have issues and are sometimes a resource hog and they still give you little to no protection from other vulnerabilities like the ones I mentioned in my email. My company and some of my customers have servers at big name hosting providers and when asked they never give me an explicit answer on whether or not to use a virusscanner but they always stress to lock-down the server. As a matter of fact I am often running into discussions with sysadmins when I have to tell them that the ASP.NET worker process needs to have "almost" full control on the DNN web folder. This is what worries them and they don't run virusscanners on their servers all the time (just scheduled process for scanning). I guess you don't know what are the security issues webservers.

Anyway my post was to inform the community about this problem and the SMTP test facility did not report any helpful message other than a vague message that the connection was refused by the server.

Marc
