Hi all,

I'm a bit stuck on how to move my site to our companies web server.  I have access to remote desktop on the server but VS isn't installed.  First i tried installing dnn from scratch and adding my modules/skins, but the problem with that was I couldn't add any references to the project.  Can anyone explain to me the best way to transfer this across?

At the moment i have the db and all the files copied over...wasn't really sure what i was going to achieve doing this but i was out of ideas.  When i try to view the root folder I am presented with the 'Under construction' page. Is this how its done?....

Simon

Hey Simon,

In general - the backup/restore process is like this:

  1. Back up your file system
  2. Back up your database
  3. Zip both of them up and move them to your "new" server
  4. extract and restore the database, create a user or otherwise handle DB authentication for your website
  5. extract your file system to your favorite location
  6. apply file system priveleges for the appropriate account (network service typically)
  7. configure your application in IIS, set up host headers, etc..

Hope that helps,

Ian

Hi Ian

I've already done those steps but i still can't seem to get my site to access the database. I get the following error:

A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server)

I've added ASPNET and NETWORK SERVICES to the virtual directory permissions and added a user to the database. Not sure what else to try to be honest.  I'm guessing theres a problem with either permissions or my connection string.....

Still having this issue?  Have I was having similar issue when I migrated from a 2k server to 2k3.  I got it working by adding the virtual directory.
