I need some help getting a 4.5.3 dnn sql database to work with a 4.9 install.

The site is hosted by GoDaddy and I used their Application Manager to install 4.9. I was unable to choose to use the database that has the information I need.

Some background:

I tried to perform update 4.5.3 > 4.7 using GoDaddy's application manager, with the hopes of getting it to 4.9, but received application errors when I initiated the install of the update. GoDaddy told me that the issue was with the application and that I would have to figure it out because it was third party software so I restored 4.5.3 only to find out that my old version also now didn't work! I decided to uninstall what was there and install 4.9 using the application manager.

I sucessfully installed version 4.9 using GoDaddy's application manager. I installed 4.9 into a directory with the same name as the OLD, deleted 4.3.5 install.

Now I have 2 SQL databases: One with the data from the 4.5.3 installation of DNN that I would like to retrieve and the other one that was created by the 4.9 version install of DNN with no information that I am interested in saving.

How do I get the old data to work with the new install taking into account the following?:

The database from the old dnn install that I would like to retrieve the data from used custom templates and containers to generate all of the pages within the site, including the log in. I made copies of the entire 4.5.3 dnn folder before I deleted it in case I would need those files. IN addtion, I know there are custom modules that were installed in the 4.5.3 install.

In addition, I will confess I'm not a server admin with advanced knowledge like many of you all. Everything is done on my remote hosting account.

Any help you can give me would be much appreciated! I've lost over 200 registered users information and countless pages of information that if saved would mean a world of gratitude to me. :-)

You need to upgrade your old 4.5.3 application to 4.9.0, I suggest to do this locally, if you have the chance to download files and database.

  • install old 4.5.3 locally and get it to run (you will need to adjust both connection strings in web.config and need to add the localhost installation path to portalAlias table in the database)
  • upgrade 3rd party modules as needed
  • copy web.config to backup.config
  • download 4.9.0 install package from DotNetNuke.com and unzip hierarchically, overwriting all existing files
  • open new web.config and old web.config, copy over from old file settings for both connection string, machin key, code subdirectories, objectQualifier and DatabaseOwner
  • access your local site, view the upgrade performing. If there are no issues, adjust connection string with value from GoDadday site and upload files and database.
