i downloaded the new 4.9.1 dnn and am trying to splice some custom code changes into the DNN core files found in /library. after a simple change i wanted to test and found i get over 90 errors... even without my update.

how do i get the dnn project to compile?

(i am using VS2005)

I'm assuming you're using the DNN source code. Open the .sln file with Notepad and verify that the project is pointing to the right URL. By default it's pointing to http://localhost/dotnetnuke_2. Note that there are two places you need to change it. Then open the solution and try a ReBuild on the project.
