Hello,

I am trying to do a local install of DNN 4.9.1 on my laptop running Vista by following the instructions in the "DotNetNuke Websites" book on pages 37-56.  I get up to Step 6 "Running the DotNetNuke Install Wizard" and I recieve the following error after typing in http://localhost/dotnetnuke into my IE7 Browser.

I have searched through numerous web postings on setting up SQL Server 2005 and the firewall to correct the error and have already done the following:

- Enabled remote connections to the server by setting TCP/IP and pipes

- Set automatic (rather than manual) for the Server Browser startup

- Went into Norton and created rules for the SQL Server program and ports 1433 and 1434 to have a hole through the firewall

I have not done anything to the web.config file, as there were no instructions to do so in the book.  Any help that anyone can provide would be very much appreciated!

In IIS 7, setting up the web site is a bit more tricky. Make sure to setup web site first, before unzipping files. If you tweaked settings via IIS configuration, re-unzip the web.config into the folder root and retry.

Thanks!  That fix worked up to a point.  I was able to bring up the install wizard and get to where I configure the database connection.  However, when I tested the database connection, I got the same connection error as before:

Connection Error(s):
Index #: 0
Source: .Net SqlClient Data Provider
Class: 20
Number: -1
Message: An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)

What should I do now?  I used the default settings for the database connection screen (SQL Server 2005 Express, Server: ./SQLExpress, Database: Database.mdf, Integrated Security and Run as db owner checked, object qualifier blank).

Hi everyone,

I was finally able to install DNN 4.9.1 on my laptop!  I had to completely deinstall SQL Server 2005 from my computer, reinstall the latest version of SQL Server 2005 (SP3) and enable remote connections again.

Thanks for your help!

Please google in quotes for clues:

"An error has occurred while establishing a connection to the server. When connecting to SQL Server 2005, this failure may be caused by the fact that under the default settings SQL Server does not allow remote connections. (provider: SQL Network Interfaces, error: 26 - Error Locating Server/Instance Specified)"
