Hello everyone,

I am trying to install DNN 04.09.02 on my remote host. Every step of the install setup goes fine, file permission and database connection checks pass but when trying to install the database I get the following error.

Installing Database - Version 4.4.0...FAILURE 400 - Thread was being aborted.

Thank you

I had just recently upgraded to a Vista Ultimate x64 system with Visual Studio 2008, IIS 7, MS SQL Server 2005 and had the same problem.  Even though I have SQL Server installed, I usually connect to an offsite hosted SQL Server where the database resides. Ultimately, all sites I build are hosted elsewhere and it's just easier to build the site on my system, but already use the hosted database.

IIS7 is by default configured to abort any connection after 120 seconds of inactivity. Well, as you're waiting for DNN to install, over 2 minutes will elapse while the database is populated. IIS7 dutifully cancels the thread.

To all the IIS7 gurus this may be old news, but I was just trying to get the web site up and running. IIS7 might as well be Apache for all I'm concerned, so this threw me for a loop at first.

Fortunately, this problem is easily corrected with IIS Manager. Bring up the "Advanced Settings" for the web site (right click on the site name in the Connections window, select Manage Web Sites, then click Advanced Settings):

Changing the Connection Time-out value to a larger value will correct the problem.

Of course, if your IIS host is shared, you may not be able to change the timeout values (you may beg your hosting provider to change it though). But, ultimately, you really should use a local SQL Server/database. Performance during installation and general use is just sooo much better.

Thank you Mike,

Since my site is located on a share hosting server I cannot access the IIS settings so I contacting their tech support and recived the following replys back. Any other ideas? I was originally trying to install the Community 4x but have also tried 4.9.1 & 4.8.4 and get the same errors. I have other domains running DNN with this same host so I know they are compatible with DNN, just cant get it to install now.

Thank you

Reply1:

We have tried to install DNN for your website couple of times but every time it failed with "Error: Thread was being aborted." error. We tried to increase script timeout, connection timeout and other settings but without luck.

You can see in the attachment the following:
1.jpg - screenshot of installation error.
2.jpg - website connection timeout settings.
3.jpg - application request execution timeout

You may want to contact software vendor regarding this issue because we do not support third party software.

Note: We use Windows 2003 Standard Edition SP2 with IIS 6.0 on all our servers.
If you have any questions, please e-mail us.

Thank you.

We tried to install couple of times with different settings of IIS and application timeouts but without luck.
Every time installation fails with "Thread was being aborted".
This error is generated by DNN code. Yes, it may be related to some kind of timeout settings but it is not clear from the returned error message.
There are a lot of articles in Internet that describe the same issue with DNN installation but we couldn't find a solution for it.
If you know what settings should be set, please point us and we will configure them on the server.

If you have any questions, please e-mail us.

Thank you.

RDO, I feel your pain. Unfortunately, I have not used IIS 6 so I'm not able to suggest anything. Except, that there was an unresolved entry about THREAD ABORTED in http://support.dotnetnuke.com. I would look it up, but it doesn't seem to be working right now. Sorry.
