No clear instructions for beginners.  Installation and Instructions are for advanced programmers only. I registered and tried "DotNetNuke Quick Administration Guide.pdf" but the screens do not match anything I can find. No mention of what software is needed on my computer. I installed Microsoft .Net just for this and all it did was make it even more confusing and my "Control Panel" stuff disappeared.  What else is needed? I downloaded "DotNetNuke_Community_04.09.03_Install.zip" and extracted it but there is no install or setup file to click on.  What is going on here? Help please.

I apologize for inappropriate documentation. AFAIK there are more up2date instructions on www.mitchelsellers.com

in short:

  • unzip DNN install package to a directory on your web server (needs to be a IIS or cassini supporting ASP.Net 2.0+)
  • grant full permissions to ASP.Net Account ("Network Service" by default)
  • create a blank web site and grant owner permission to a user you want to use
  • Setup IIS web site appropriately, set ASP.Net version to 2.0 and default document to default.aspx
  • call your site, the install wizard will show up and guide you

If you are simply experimenting you might want to try 5.0.1 and you might find this way of installing more helpful:
