What is the best upgrade path... direct replacement of files of course with the usual precautions?

direct upgrade is supported, but please make proper backups.

The problem is that dnn 4.5.3 does not support xml merge yet, so web.config changes will need to be made manually.

you may try direct upgrade first, but if you experience difficulties, I suggest to upgrade to 4.6.2 first and next to 4.9.4 (most stable version currently avaialble).

you may follow this upgrade check list.

yep gonna try the direct upgrade first... Just moved the database to 2005 so hoping that will alleviate the problems some have had with scripts running on the db changes.

Thanks for the replies.

Epic fail.  Once it finished with the error on the script for the EventLog it had nothing in the HTML modules and got a login error.  I since gone back to backups and restored the files from a back as well as the database to prevent a complete night of pulling what little hair out.

I will try to the other jumps first before going for 5.01.  never mind if you saw the post I found where 4.6.2 was....
