Hello,

I wonder if it is possible to access the DNN web.config file (in order to modify it for example) on-line, within a browser, and under a DNN user account enough powered to do so (i.e. maybe a site admin or a host superuser).

I am aware of the usual way to access this file by directly connecting to the server (or computer) hosting the DNN directory. On the one hand, such a potential on-line access to this file could be practical in a sense when there is a need to change quickly the DNN configuration. On the other hand, this may be a lack of security for malicious users.

Thanks for your attention and for your ideas.

With regards,
Ny Haingo, from Lyon /France.

Not sure how you could edit it through through browser but I have successfully used ftp to send an updated web.config.

Hope it helps.

Hello,

Thanks for your reply, Bobbypack.

You seem to confirm my belief that it is not possible to access (and so edit) the DNN Web.config through the DNN Web interface itself. This belief applies at least to DNN versions earlier than 3.2.2 (the later included) to my knowledge. What about the 4.x.x?

Concerning the FTP update possibility, Bobbypack, do you mean you reached the target directory thanks to a shared access clearly to this directory? By this way, I would easily understand the feasibility of the Web.config edition. Nevertheless my question does not take this option into account.

Regards,
Ny Haingo, from Lyon /France.

On the contrary, I'm pretty sure you can edit it. I just don't think it's smart. There's too much of a chance that someone could break something which would bring down every portal on the host. Not something I'd really want to support. I want to say that ASP.NET 2.0 comes with an online web.config editor, tho. I remember playing with it once in beta. I haven't seen it (or sought it out) since then, tho, so I'm not sure if it's still part of the package. Also, I don't know how accessible it is. I used it on localhost, so it may or may not be accessible remotely. Something to look into, tho.

Hello,

Thanks for your complementary information, Michael.

I effectively heard about some ability to edit online the Web.Config file under the ASP.NET 2.0 framework. My question partly raised from this rumor -which I was not believing to be only a rumor.

Your answer suggested me a -rather naive ?- idea to test whether this config file could be accessible or not (with the useful user account powerness): developing a short module whose view control would open, retrieve and display the content of the config file in a first step, then whose edit control would allow to edit and validate the new content by writing it into the config file.

I believe this is not a really difficult task -and that anyone who uses to develop DNN modules may test such an idea in a couple of minutes. I have not enough skills to do so at this time. I would be curious to know from anyone who makes an attempt.

Cordially,
Ny Haingo, from Lyon /France.
