My son and I have been trying for days to download & install DNN so he can do volunteer web design for worthy organizations.  Please help!  When we try to install this is what happens:
This is the page we try to do downloads from:
http://www.dotnetnuke.com/tabid/125/default.aspx
(after we log in our user account at http://www.dotnetnuke.com/About/Downloads/tabid/125/ctl/Login/Default.aspx)

This is the message we get after we download and try to open it up:
Windows can not open this file.
DotNetNuke.sln
To open this file Windows needs to know what program created it.
Windows can go on line to look it up automatically, or you can manually select from a list of programs on your computer.
What do you want to do (Choice of using the web service to find the appropriate program or select the program from a list)

We are new to all of this and have been attempting to download DNN 4.  Is this the right version?  Why are we having these troubles.  Please help!  cakkyb@msn.com   WE THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

You should probably download the install package, instead of the source package. The .sln file is for Visual Studio. You can use either DNN3 or 4. That doesn't really matter as long as the server you're using supports .NET 1.1 and 2.0.

Read thru the Installation Guide and it should tell you what you need to do to get rolling with the install package.

Thank you very much for your response! I shared it with a friend who is knowlegeable in programming and he suggested that I find out if 1. Can  we use Vmware or Microsoft Virtual PC to set up a server since we don't have a server OS? and  2. Where can we get a working demo copy of Visual Studio (90 day trial)?
So we did a Google search for this and would like some assistance in deciding which free trial download of Visual Studio to select from this page: http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/products/trial/
and whether to download the 45 day free trial of Microsoft Virtual PC from here:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/virtualpc/default.mspx
would then be all to successfully download DNN.  We also found a webcast at:

http://www.microsoft.com/events/series/msdnvb2005.mspx  (Scroll down to MSDN Architecture Webcast: Learn How to Create Web Site Portals Using DotNetNuke: Overview and Installation of DotNetNuke (Parts1 to 6) (Level 200)

which Part 1 deals with downloading and recommends DNN Version 2.12
Our home PC is Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 Pentium 4 with 2.40GHz, 2.39 GHz, and 496 MB of Ram.

Any further assistance or recommendations would be invaluable to get us up and running.  This weekend is National and Global Youth Service Day and my son wants to do his part.  WE THANK YOU!!!!!

Whether you use VMWare or VirtualPC you still have to have a valid license for whatever OS you are running.  Also, VMWare and MS are giving away there Virtual servers away free now.  It would be cheaper for you to upgrade to XP professional which comes with IIS web server.

Also, unless your son plans on developing custom modules for the sites he is going to be creating then he really does not need to have any copies of VS.Net (even one of the free versions).  DNN includes everything he will need to create almost any site he does.  Below are my suggestions.

1) Upgrade computer to XP proffessional.
2) Download and Install the .Net 2.0 Runtime from here.
2) Download  and install the install.zip instead of the source.zip for DNN version the latest version of DNN (4.0.3)

Or probably the best solution for you would be to contact one of the web hosts that will host the DNN installation for you. They have some at very reasonable monthly fees. Then the only question is which one will actually install DNN for you. www.DotNetPark.com has succeeded for me. Godaddy says they will, but won't even support the results of their 'Install' button on their value added apps page. For the simplest and quickest time to get up and running I would suggest DotNetPark. Then you will be able to focus on all the fun stuff that DNN can provide for you and your son, and not worry about the tricky DNN installation process.

DNN is a powerful and highly configurable website framework. It can be installed in serveral diferent ways and that can make it tricky to troubleshoot. It would be worth your while to get through the installation process as quickly as possible (have someone do it for you).
