Hello,

I've got my site up and running and now I'm wanting to make sure It's secure. Couple of Questions:

Question 1:

In my web.config file ... I'm connecting to SQL Server 2005 (Not Express) and I have inputed the username and password in the connectionstring ... the website sits on the same server as SQL ... is it safe to have this in the web.config or should I or can I change the authentication to trusted and log on using windows authentication.

Question 2:

When I installed DNN .. I needed to set access permissions on the IUSER (Read and Write) and IWAM (Full Control) is it safe to leave this way?

Thanks in advance

Brian

Hi Brian,

1. you can encrypt your web.config sections if you like (http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2006/01/09/434893.aspx), though windows authentication is also a good choice.

2. you should not need IWAM permissions , it's used for asp/cgi etc., not asp.net. I would also usually recommend read, write and modify permissions to allow user uploads to overwrite existing objects (if you want to support that)

We have a few security documents @ security.dotnetnuke.com that are worth a read.

Thanks,

Cathal

Securing DNN also means securing IIS, SQL Server and the server itself, as well as network transport.  Don't stop with just DNN.
