just went through the upgrade to 5.1.1 now I cant login as host, I can see the site but the login is not working. It was showing a lot of sql errors as it was going the the db updates, but I cant get even get to those logs to tell you what happened. there are no menu items on the menu bar.

You should be able to find the logfiles under \providers\dataproviders\sqldataprovider (or something like that at least).

That should tell a lot about what went wrong...

  • what has been your previous DNN version used?
  • how did you perform the upgrade?

went from 4.8.2 to 5.1.1, downloaded the upgrade package and unzipped it in the directory and then browsed to the site to begin the install upgrade process. each error log for 4.8.2, 4.9, 4.9.1, 5, 5.0.1, 5.1.1 shows a "The timeout period elapsed prior to completion of the operation or the server is not responding." there seems to be an issue with the database server performance, I suggest to restore database, truncate transaction log, truncate tables eventlog and search tables and retry upgrade.
