It's hard to say what the problem is, but IMHO I would not spend too much time on low-level core errors. I would try another upgrade.

Basically I had my site upgraded and there were no errors. But the site was shafted (lots of errors in the SQL log files).

So I had it cloned and upgraded and it worked fine.

So I  immediately tried again on my live site and it failed miserably (note, they were CLONES).

So I tried to swap the successful upgrade for my live site and it bombed - so I had to roll back everything.

Hence I would first confirm that the upgrade fails consistently before spending time trying to fix it.

I am personally going to wait a few more versions...

Any issues that can be reproduced - feed back on support.dotnetnuke.com would be appreciated  - otherwise you are probably going to have to wait for another 4 versions :)

Cheers Rodney!

I know ;)  I got to that point where you start ripping your hair out because things arn't making sense logically (2+2=5) so decided to hold off for a while! I've raised all issues as forum posts to see if other people get them - nothing concrete enough to put in Gemini yet because more people don't seem to have the same problem (unfortunately ;)

I'll have another crack at it in a few weeks when my hair has grown back (ps - I am sure 90% of 5.x upgrades will go smoothly and quickly as my Test site went so I don't mean to put anyone else off! DNN5.x has some great usability features I have noticed and I am dead keen on upgrading ASAP - just not working on my particular instance!

Recommendation: Clone your live site and give it a go now! Hopefully it will upgrade fine...

Cliff,

I just restored from backup and left it at 4.9.4. The errors are simply too bizzarre to risk using in production at this point.

What I noticed specifically was that there were no edit icons next to the listings nor any of the normal links at the bottom except delete on the ADMIN/EXTENSIONS page. I saw these things on the copied site that I upgraded. But, they do not appear on my production site. I have reproduced this behavior several times in a row while trying to upgrade my production site. Keep in mind, my copy is on the same server.

So, I copied my DNN directory into a new directory. I backed up my DNN SQL server 2008 exress database and restored it into a new database. I created a new site in IIS and changed all the appropriate settings including doing the whole portal alias thing in DNN BEFORE I copied the database.

That site work fine with the upgrade, but the original does not.

That is strange. Whatever it is that is different between the two after the above procedure must be causing this... I just can't figure out what is different... perhaps some GUIDs or something....

Ted, can you elaborate on what does not work? I did the 5.1.2 upgrade and my site runs fine but I cannot do stuff like Edit Roles, etc. This post has a small portion of my log file. There are some references to permissions. And I don't have any modules even showing up on the Extensions page and several others. I am into about two weeks with these issues and my client is growing weary. I may have to roll back to 4.9.4 but I would rather be able to solve these issues. It seems like a lot of people are having a lot of issues. But most of the posts will request more info and when it is provided no further posts are made. I know this is a complex environment, but with so many people having so many problems, it seems like there would be some commonality.

Hey Ted thanks for the feedback. I solved all my problems. Guess what it was! DNN 5.1.2. So I just rolled back to my backup of 4.9.5. I cannot overemphasize how important it is to get good backups before any type of upgrade. Now everything is working again. Hopefully 5.1.3 or 5.2.0 will be out soon and I can test it out. But for now, I will not be doing any more 5.1.2 upgrades. They have consumed waaaayyyyy too much of my time. I probably have about 5 that have worked out and about 2 dozen more DNN 4 sites that will need to be upgraded at some point. But not now. I have to get back to revenue-generating work.

Ted thanks for the feedback. I just waxed eloquent about my thoughts on DNN 5.1.2 and then the forum crashed on submitting my post. Probably best anyway.

Suffice it to say that I solved all my problems by restoring to DNN 4.9.5 like you. Now I will get back to some revenue-generating work and hold off on the other two dozen DNN 5 upgrades until I see more stability.
