I am struggling to get DNN 5.1.2 installed in a subfolder on GoDaddy.com. I keep receiving a "500 - Internal Server error" message immediately after trying to start the installation.

Below are the steps I have taken:

  1. Created a "sys" directory in IIS Management (checked "Anonymous Access" and "Application Root").
  2. Created a "sys" folder off my root directory. Gave it read/write permissions and set its children to inherit these permissions.
  3. Created a SQL Server database.
  4. Downloaded DNN 5.1.2 installation zip file.
  5. Uploaded the installation zip file to a GoDaddy "DNN512" subfolder.
  6. Unzipped the installation file to the GoDaddy "sys" folder. (Reset the read/write permissions just to be sure all subfolders were read/write.)
  7. Downloaded the web.config file and changed the database connection strings under <connectionStrings> and <appSettings>.
  8. Uploaded the web.config file.
  9. Deleted the development.config and release.config files.
  10. Surfed to "http://<mydoman>/sys" to kick off the installation.
  11. Immediately received the message "500 - Internal server error. There is a problem with the resource you are looking for, and it cannot be displayed."

It seems like the "resource" that cannot be displayed might be the database, but I am unsure of how to confirm this or how to fix it.

I have gone as far as using GoDaddy's "Hosting Connection" auto installer to install version 4.9.0 of DNN to get hold of and copy the database connection strings in their web.config file, but no luck.

I can't mess with this much longer and will (sadly) use GoDaddy's 4.9.0 installation if I can't get the latest version installed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

hmm

Hi, I successfully managed to do this twice. I had trouble with it in the past, but the last few times went smooth. However I don't exactly know what I did differently than you.

I do remember that I never bothered with editing the web.config though. Just create the database, upload the ftp like you did and access your domain/folder without touching web.config. The install wizard will load in which it will eventually ask you for the database info. Just continue on with the wizard and that's all there was to it, if I'm not mistaken.
