I had DNN community edition 05.01.02 setup and running three portals on a live server.

Yesterday I uploaded and unzipped DotNetNuke_Community_05.01.04_Upgrade.zip.

After browsing to the url the DNN upgrade wizard began to run, but after the wizard had completed I was greeted with a message telling me that the installation had failed! No other error details were presented.

Having turned on debug symbols etc. on the site, I can now get the following error description ....

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Source Error:
Line 81:             ComponentFactory.InstallComponents(New ProviderInstaller("profiles", GetType(DotNetNuke.Security.Profile.ProfileProvider)))
Line 82:             ComponentFactory.InstallComponents(New ProviderInstaller("permissions", GetType(DotNetNuke.Security.Permissions.PermissionProvider)))
Line 83:             Dim provider As DotNetNuke.Security.Permissions.PermissionProvider = DotNetNuke.ComponentModel.ComponentFactory.GetComponent(Of DotNetNuke.Security.Permissions.PermissionProvider)()
Line 84:             If provider Is Nothing Then
Line 85:                 ComponentFactory.RegisterComponentInstance(Of DotNetNuke.Security.Permissions.PermissionProvider)(New DotNetNuke.Security.Permissions.PermissionProvider())

I really don't mind the fact that I might well have to scrap my installation and start from scratch, what I do mind about however is the fact that I do not know of any way in which I can retrieve all of the data for the hosted portals

Help will be very much appreciated.

Thanks in advance

We are a web software development company.

One of our clients purchased a DotNetNuke license and asked us to install in-house on their servers. They provided us with DNN 5.01.04 Install, Updates, Source, and Starter Kit. We attempted the *fresh* installation and also hit the same barrier.

Currently trying to determine if one of the pre-requisites for installation was incomplete, i.e., create a db, update web.config, setup IIS, permission folders.

Will post feedback when we get past this roadblock.

Best...

Hello Again,

Before running the installation, we edited the web.config and removed the references to SQL Express since we use SQL 2005 Enterprise. Bad idea!

We restored the lines for SQL Express and the installation ran as expected.

Good luck!
