Trying to upgrade our DNN installation.  The end goal is to get a two web head farm setup.  We decided after reading about the 5.x.x changes to also go ahead and try moving to a 5 version of DNN with this move as well.  So I have a virtual machine setup (Win Server 2k8 r2) with copies of my current dnn installation and database.  I verified that the current site was functioning correctly on the virtual machine setup first.  I downloaded the 5.1.4 Upgrade zip file and unzipped it onto the DNN directory.  I navigated to the site (autoupgrade is set to True in the web.config).  I got a 404 error trying to get to the home page and any aspx page (I could navigate to a test html file just fine).  After much fiddling around (that spanned two days) I tried renaming web.config to web.config.old and moving the connectionstrings info and machine key info over to the release.config file and rename that to web.config.  Then navigated to the site and the upgrade started/ran.  The only error was on Executing Application Upgrades 5.0.0 errored, all the rest was successfull.  I clicked the link at the bottom to go on to the portal and verified the home page showed up and some sub pages showed up.  Then I left for the day (this was yesterday 10/6), came in this morning and the home page no longer came up on the virtual machine.  I was getting errors that System.Web.Extensions couldn't be found, turns out there were a lot of refs still looking for the 1.0.61025.0.  I tried renaming the web.config and going back to my orig web.config, no change so I switched it back. I changed all the system.web.extensions refs in the web.config file to 3.5.0.0.  The site loaded then and I'm able to login with my host account.  I had some errors on my home page from a 3rd party module still wanting the old system.web.extensions file.  I ended up copying the older version of the dll into the bin directory and that removed those errors.  However, the current issue is that none of the Admin or Host pages will come up.  In the menu dropdown all the images for them are broken.  Trying to navigate to them gives a message IE is unable to display the webpage.  I tried clicking on the page from the menu as well as typing in the address using default.aspx?tabid=XXX style in case it was a URL re-writer problem.  We are using iFinity URLMaster for our friendlyurl provider.  Any help or suggestions on how to get the admin/host pages working would be appreciated.

I will start by saying I am no expert here, however I have done a few upgrades with good success.

The steps I took are listed below.

  1. Downloaded the Latest DNN 4.9.x version
  2. Downloaded the Latest DNN 5.1.x version
  3. Upgraded to the Latest 4.9.x version
  4. Verified the Upgrade was Successful
  5. Upgrade to the Latest 5.1.x version
  6. Verified the Upgrade was Successful

I have had good success doing it this way.  Hope this helps.

Ok, so an update....the admin and host pages are working now.  It looks like part of the upgrade it flipped all of the host and admin pages over to being secure.  So once I added a binding for https in my IIS settings the host and admin pages are working now.  I am getting ambigious type errors from having the multiple versions of system.web.extensions.dll, but once I update the various 3rd party controls or switch them out then I should be able to remove that older version of the dll and resolve that issue.  So I think for right now the site is working.  So I'm going to check the site a bit more and make sure, then it is on to setting up the web farm.

Hi Tony

Not sure if you've checked this, but if you're getting errors looking at the wrong versions of .net components, just maybe check to see what version of .net your IIS Site is set up for?   It should either be 1 or 2.0 (.net 3.5 is more of an extension of the framework rather than true upgrade)

If you're worried about the Url Master module interfering (it should be OK) then you can just disable it either via the interface or via the web.config.  But I suspect the problem here is more IIS related.
