Hi Folks,

I am in need of some upgrade advice. I had some trouble going from 4.09.05 to 5.01.04. If you wish, you can read the gory details here - http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/111/threadid/336082/scope/posts/Default.aspx. I did some diagnostics on IIS and found nothing. I then had my hosting SE’s do an upgrade on a test site on my dedicated server. They had similar problems. Today I decided to just install a new clean version of 5.01.04 on my local machine. I had no problems.

I think these results point to module issues. I have a number of them including some pretty complex custom ones.

What is the best course of action? I would like to get to version 5 but how painful is this going to be? Is there any detailed documentation on this subject?

In lieu of detailed documentation is there a good example module that was designed for DNN version 5?

Why post in a new thread?  As for your issue, there are no details posted so nobody can help.  Do ypou have third party or custom modules installed?  Did you verify they would work in DNN 5?

Thanks, for the reply. I thought maybe I had it in the wrong place because this was an upgrade. At any rate other than the Win Event Viewer errors in the other post all that I get is this:

Server Application Unavailable

The web application you are attempting to access on this web server is currently unavailable.  Please hit the "Refresh" button in your web browser to retry your request.

Administrator Note: An error message detailing the cause of this specific request failure can be found in the application event log of the web server. Please review this log entry to discover what caused this error to occur.

Yes, I do have some custom modules. I have successfully installed a clean new version of 5.01.04. I am ignorant of the differences in version 4 and 5 modules. I thought I would buy the two new DNN 5 books on Amazon and try to install my custom modules in debug mode. But I wasn't sure if it is advisable to use VS2005 with DNN version 5. I'll get VS2008 if required. Also if there is good detailed documentation online on DNN 5 module development direct me to it. Is there perhaps a checklist of differences?

Bottom line is I am not looking for someone to help debug my stuff just some documentation guidance or perhaps some recommended example DNN 5 modules.

Thanks,

G.M.

This was resolved by a link provided by Jack Feyes for the problem in this Install It forum post http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/Forums/tabid/795/forumid/111/threadid/336082/scope/posts/Default.aspx. Just go to the post and follow Jack's link.
