Hi!

I have a website on DNN 1.0.10c and I need to migrate it to the latest release. I need to keep the data. I tried step by step upgrading. But after first upgrade, to version 2.0.4, I get "Object reference not set to an instance of an object." error when I try to login. Otherwise the content is working.

I haven't found any documentation or tutorial what needs to be done to upgrade these early versions.

So my question is, what is the easiest (I mean least painful) way to migrate the data to latest (version 5) realease of DNN?

Since the modules developed for DNN 1.x will NOT work in 5.x (referring to 3rd party, as core modules should be upgraded), You will have to create a Skin for 5.x (1.x this was all part of the code), and since your upgrade path is so very long and difficult (like you said, step by step from 1.x to first 2.x, then last 2.x, then first 3.x, then last 3.x, etc), I would suggest bringing up a new site using DNN 5.x, creating and uploading your skin etc, and them as much as it pains me to say, Manually Copying and Pasting the info (recreate the site).  I not only think this could be faster, but would be more stable as well...

Ok, thanks for your reply. So I will try to move all the content.

Where can I find skin files in DNN v1?

DNN 1 didn't support skinning, i.e. the skin needed to be  "baked" into DNN source code (.ascx files).

After 7+ years, it must be a bit outdated and I suggest to create or buy a new skin for your site (buy from Snowcovered or use Artisteer.com)

So, after making a new skin I'm at the point when I have to move the data.

1. stop: user table. I've seen that User table is now splited into User and UserProfile tables in DNN 5. In what table passwords are saved? I guess I should also add entry for each user to which Portal belongs. Have I missed something?

What do you suggest, how to move this data? Does anyone have some code from upgrading that might help me?
