I opened up the web.config file and found a couple instances of 'database'...  In one case it was Database.mdf (see below).  In another case it was database=nwda (also pasted below). 

User Instance=True;AttachDBFilename=|DataDirectory|Database.mdf;"

<add name="SiteSqlServer" connectionString="Server=66.226.14.39;Database=nwda;uid=****;pwd=******;" providerName="System.Data.SqlClient" />

for security reasons, I removed username and password.

it looks like the second one is your active connection string, the other one must be commented, i.e. embraced by <!-- and -->

this means, to backup your site, you need to backup files AND database, database contains all content except image files.

if you didn't backup database as well, you have no option to restore, I fear, except you selected a different database owner or database name. I suggest contacting your hosting provider for support.
