I just got confirmation from my hosting company that the new hosting enviroment I was recently moved to for my dnn site "is a shared hosting environment which can be considered a web farm; however, there is no load-balancing or failover setup." (prior to this move it was not a web farm envirmonemtn).

This I think explains - at long last - why users who selected 'Remember me' when logging in (which should keep them logged in for 1 week in the portal) are getting logged out within an hour, sometimes within minutes, the time varies, but it sure never reaches a week.

What configuration changes do I need to make to the web.config? I know there is info out there on the settings for a web farm but what throws me is this point of there being "no load-balancing or failover setup". Is there something special I need to do?

It's really depressing to spend 15 minutes replying to a post and then click submit and lose it because of an unspecified ERROR. Ouch.

Anyway I'll try again.

It seems strange that you have a webfarm that does NOT provide load balancing or failover. What is the point of a webfarm if not to do those two things??

In any case if your host has a webfarm it means multiple webheads, so where is the website files being kept? UNC share? or does each webhead have a copy synchronized with some type of file replication? Is your web.config set to enable webfarm support? and to use file-based caching provider?

I'm less verbose this time and if I lose this post you will get nothing at all..

Penny, thanks for the reply. I asked the hoster for more info and they replied saying:

"I think there is just a misunderstanding of terms. 'Web farm' to Microsoft/ASP.Net is different than 'Web Farm' to the rest of the IT community. We have a server farm, not a web farm."

Which leaves me a bit confused. In the context of DNN is a "server farm" equivalent to "webfarm"? Do I change my web.config to enable "webfarm" support? Or leave it as it is today (not enabled for webfarm support). Any ideas?!

just a hint from a power user: often you may regain your input, if you press browser back button, immediately after you encountered the issue. you will get displayed the text source, copy, switch to source view and paste it before resubmission.

I wonder if your ISP has a complete understanding of the terms?

Wikopedia (which can hardly be seen as biased to Microsoft) directs the request for Web Farm to the definition of Server Farm:

Server farms are commonly used for cluster computing. Many modern supercomputers comprise giant server farms of high-speed processors connected by either Gigabit Ethernet or custom interconnects such as Infiniband or Myrinet.

Another common use of server farms is for web hosting, which are sometimes referred to as web farms.

Anyway enough semantics, you need to find out from your ISP if your DNN site is indeed being hosted on multiple servers and if it is, then are the files being replicated between the webheads or are they pointing to a common file share?

Your original question/problem had to do with the Remember Me cookie, but are you seeing any issues with changes to the site being delayed? In other words if you edit a module and then refresh the page do your edits show up immediately? If the only problem is that Remember me is working sporadic then you might need to look elsewhere. Remember Me sets a cookie so maybe something is in the cookie and when your user hits another server in the "WebFarm" that server is not recognizing the cookie information. Hopefully there are some cookie experts who might chime in on this.

There are many posts about Remember Me:
