During the upgrade from 5.1.4 to 5.2 my browser locked up during general updates.

No - I don't have a backup.

the site displys the contaiers - but not most of the content.  On html modules I get the following error

Error: What are Endowments? is currently unavailable.

Any ideas how I can fix this?

yes it is - I am doing a repair of it just in case.

last night I backed up the DB and files to try a local install and test a few things...  I was contemplating just trying to apply the update again...

This morning when I connect to the hosted site it comes up with the site is currently unavailable.  I thought this was odd - because i could get to it yesterday nd was just getting the errors above.

Our netowkr guru is working on pulling the files from a snapshot of the virtual server off our san from a few days ago - any tips about restoring the site from backup?

restoring a working site from a backup (of both, files and database) should be straightforward, if done into original location, otherwise you need to setup IIS web site accordingly and might add domain address into portal alias table in the database, if different from original one.
