I have a pretty extensive site with a few modules installed. I had tried in the past to upgrade to 5.0 but it failed so I just stayed where I was but now am trying to upgrade to 5.2.1 and same problems have come back. I just can't get past it and the site is SOOO darn slow under 4.9. I am truely regretting the day I every decided to try use DNN (web development on eggshells if you ask me!) but anyway now I am stuck with it and have to try fix this, or upgrade it to try make it work better.

Below is the error message. Any ideas what the deal is ??

Compiler Error Message: BC30451: Name 'FormatVersion' is not declared.

You need to provide more details when requesting help in a forum.

  • Exactly what steps did you follow in doing the upgrade.
  • Exactly at what point in the procedure did it fail.

Only problem I experienced when upgrading turned out to be that the folder permissions had not propagated correctly when I had copied the new files over the old ones.  I restored everything back to the way it was before the upgrade then after copying the files I repropogated all the permissions and it worked fine.   So I would check that out.  (Most of the DNN errors I have experienced were related to some form of server configuration problem, I switched to a host that specializes in DNN and have had no problems since then.)

One side comment, making nasty comments about a product doesn't tend to endear you to the people who you are trying to get help from.  I would leave them out of my posts.  So far DNN has been working well for me, my site has been rock solid.

Edit:  You might want to double check that your config is setup per this:

http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Community/F...

 Here's what I would do...

Restore back to a known good version of both the database and website.  Verify that it is all working as expected and check the error logs of the site to ensure that you do not have any errors occuring.  If you are getting errors you need to resolve those first.

Then look at these 2 articles on how to do the upgrade:

http://www.mitchelsellers.com/blogs/a...
http://www.mitchelsellers.com/blogs/a...

The error you are getting would leave me to suspect that something was wrong even before you started the upgrade or the upgrade files failed to extract correctly, as you are not properly linking to the DotNetNuke.dll which is where FormatVersion is declared.  In any case the first action is to roll back to a fully working site.

 Thanks John.

The errors appear to be because of the 15+ 3rd party modules installed in the installation.

I duplicated the working installation and tried removing all the modules from it, then doing the upgrade and still had all sorts of errors. I tend to agree with you, that something is wrong before I even started the update.

I also tried a clean install of the 5.2.1 and then changed the database to point to the old one and let it perform it's upgrades but again had a bunch of errors and got no where. Errors like a looping "undefined...Success" and many others mentioned in all the forums here.

I have had the closest success with a fresh clean installation, adding all the version 5 3rd party modules again. Then I created a portal template with data in the old site and created a new portal in the new clean site, selection that template. Most of the stuff was there but now I have no ADMIN menu. I have the HOST menu but everything to do with the Admin menu is grayed out of the top. So I cannot do anything. Cannot create or edit pages or anything.

So back to square 1. I think the only way is to start all over again and manually copy and paste everything into the new site.

Unless someone else has an idea ? Has anyone actually managed a success upgraded of a  4.x site to 5.x ?

Sorry for the comments about DNN but my frustration levels are though the roof. I understand everyone is really trying to help and I appreciate it. I guess these issues are the price you pay for open source.

Thanks again

Chris
