I could only get 5.2.2 to install cleanly after adding the server\ASPNET user with Full control to the file system in addition to the NETWORK SERVICE user. I'm using Windows 2003 with .net3.5 sp1 and SQL Server 2005. I'm using the' Install' version.

Without the ASPNET user I get the following error on the first page of the install wizard:

Access to the path '<path...>\web.config' is denied.

After the ASPNET user is added then the installation completes.

I've installed 4.x.x many times, on this same server, without requiring the ASPNET user so am not really sure why I needed it this time.

Has anyone else had this experience?

Does 5.2.2 require the ASPNET user as well as NETWORK SERVICE?

Phil,

This sounds like a configuration issue with that site.  DotNetNuke does not have any control over which accounts require permissions as that is completely controlled by ASP.Net and IIS.  Given that the error is a permissions error on web.config, it would occur before any DotNetNuke code was executing.  I suspect that your AppPool Identity for this particular site might have been changed to the ASPNET account.  You can verify that in IIS.

Hi Joe,

Thanks for the quick  reply. If the Application was set to 'Scripts only' in IIS, would that account for the behaviour during intall? Otherwise the AppPool settings are the Win 2k3 defaults.

The Scripts setting has no effect in this.  And the only reason you would receive the error would be if the ASPNET account was the process account.
