I have been exploring dotnetnuke and amazon services for a while and read some blogs on it. But i am still very unclear about it. So i thought why not to ask here.

Ok here is my actual requirment.

Currently I am developing a media website (video sharing portal). My DNN website is hosted on a web hosting company's server.

Now what i am trying to do is:

- Host my application to amazon servers.

- utilize their auto scale capability

- Instead of uploading files to a web server and from web server to amazon storage services, I don't have to do it on amaon as my website is hosted there. So it'll reduces CPU's processing.

I can't afford Professional edition of DNN right now (as i have spend amount on development) but i have planned to buy it when i am done with these changes and estimates.

I'll really appreciate any sort of helping material to explore this in detail. And recommandation of using amazon (advantages/disadvantages) from DNN community.

- Can you please tell me what amazon services must be required for DNN website to host on amazon. I'll myself explore the Addons.

- Secondly, I heard they pay as per usage then why you have to pay at nights when there is no usage ?

- Is there any DNN specific help available to expplore it in more detail.

When you create a machine instance on EC2, the meter immediately starts running -- you pay for the duration of time your instance is active regardless of the CPU usage; you also pay for bandwidth in and out. If you are using an additional EBS volume, you pay for the storage and you pay for I/O. For a 1.7GB RAM Windows 2008 Server you will pay around $90-120 a month depending on usage.

I have done a fair amount of experimentation running DNN on Amazon and found it to be stable and a good alternative to dedicated servers. For example, the "small" Windows offering gives you a Windows 2008 Server+IIS+ASP.NET 3.5+SQL Express 2008 box ready to run in a few minutes. You can have an operational DNN site in about 15 mins. starting with the time you create the server instance. I typically add a 50GB EBS volume and put my websites and data on this volume (I map it to a folder using Windows Disk Management). This allows me to easily detach and attach the volume to another server when the need arises.

The only thing I have not yet tried is setting up a DNN webfarm using DFS. I plan on doing this in the near future with the Professional Edition. If someone has done this I'd love to hear about their experience.
