David, I'm not sure why you would need to run DNN locally before you restored your database? You should be pulling the files for your site down, AND the database. You also need to make sure you have the portal aliases setup as Sebastian says. I would recommend trying to bypass the visual studio web server if you can. If you have XP Pro I would install IIS 5.1 on there, and setup DNN to run in a virtual directory, like localhost/dotnetnuke then make your portalalias in the database that URL

Chris thanks for the quick response! I have already tried installing IIS 5.1 and then setup DNN to run in a virtual directory that points to the source code on my local machine. However, the problem I run into when I do this is when I try to browse to localhost/dotnetnuke, it either brings up the install wizard or no page at all. Any ideas?

Generally if the install wizard shows up this is because it can't connect to the database and thinks it is doing a new install.

Oh ok. I just tried setting up IIS 5.1 on Windows XP Pro and now its just bringing me to the "live" login page. Would deleting all references in the portalalias table and then just adding in one reference to my local machine possible fix this?

Yes, remove the live portal aliases, and add the local one. Then reset IIS, or modify the web.config so the website will reload and the portalaliases will be cleared from the cache.
