Hi, friends.  Finally took the plunge and upgraded a hosted site to 5.2.3.  Everything seemed to work fine, although I still panic since Chrome does not like the initial exposure to the new site.  However, once I got past that, I ended up with a dashboard error:

Error: Dashboard is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: The file '/site/Admin/Dashboard/Dashboard.ascx' does not exist. ---> System.Web.HttpException: The file '/site/Admin/Dashboard/Dashboard.ascx' does not exist. at System.Web.UI.Util.CheckVirtualFileExists(VirtualPath virtualPath) at System.Web.Compilation.BuildManager.GetVPathBuildResultInternal(VirtualPath virtualPath, Boolean noBuild, Boolean allowCrossApp, Boolean allowBuildInPrecompile) at System.Web.Compilation.BuildManager.GetVPathBuildResultWithNoAssert(HttpContext context, VirtualPath virtualPath, Boolean noBuild, Boolean allowCrossApp, Boolean allowBuildInPrecompile) at System.Web.Compilation.BuildManager.GetVPathBuildResultWithAssert(HttpContext context, VirtualPath virtualPath, Boolean noBuild, Boolean allowCrossApp, Boolean allowBuildInPrecompile) at System.Web.Compilation.BuildManager.GetVPathBuildResult(HttpContext context, VirtualPath virtualPath, Boolean noBuild, Boolean allowCrossApp, Boolean allowBuildInPrecompile) at System.Web.UI.TemplateControl.LoadControl(VirtualPath virtualPath) at System.Web.UI.TemplateControl.LoadControl(String virtualPath) at DotNetNuke.UI.ControlUtilities.LoadControl[T](TemplateControl containerControl, String ControlSrc) at DotNetNuke.UI.Modules.ModuleHost.LoadModuleControl() --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

Any clue how to fix this?  I don't really need the dashboard, but it would be nice to know there isn't an error lurking.

Hi Ken - I'm testing an upgrade shortly with a 4.9.3 site and based on that error, I would assume you've used an upgrade build.

I found that in the past, sometimes files were omitted out of the upgrade build that, while not need when based on one or two versions behind, were missing in other earlier versions of DNN that might not have been tested that far back.

I hope I'm not sounding too confusing, it's hard to explain, but in a nutshell, why don't you try the upgrade again by using the install build instead.

Over the last couple of years, I will generally look how far back the dnn build is that I'm going to be upgrading and I upgrade using the source files because I have found that most of these errors have been caused by files in the 'upgrade' build were never in the previous builds to start with.  I think this would be more apparent in builds that had known issues, and changing from one number to another, eg.. when we upgraded from DNN 2 > 3 we'd use the full install, when upgrading from 3 > 4 the same and that is how I have been preparing my upgrade I hope to do on dnnskins from dnn 4 > 5 by using a full install download rather than upgrade.

I hope this clarifies it, but the log is basically say - hey I can't find the file to put on the page, which perhaps could mean the module does not exist.

It's not a guaranteed solution but something I've found has worked for me in some cases.

it sounds to me, like you did not properly unzip/upload all files of DNN upgrade package. please re-unzip all files (eventually using 7-zip or another zip software instead of windows built in zip) and copy over exiting web site (even after the upgrade), and retry accessing the site.

actually AFAIR this was resolved in 5.3.0 (on certain upgrade scenarios the controlsrc for the dashboard was not updated). I'd recommend waiting until early next week and trying an update with the 5.3.1 build (5.3.0 was withdrawn to fix a few critical items)

Nina, I will certainly keep this in mind. Is there something I would have to do using the install build? I seem to remember from a couple of years ago that there was a web.config edit I might need to make. Sebastian, I never use the windows unzipper; I have an ancient (now 5 years old) copy of Winzip that still does my decompression needs. I followed your advice, but when I unzipped the upgrade again, I still did not find the pertinent Dashboard folder. But I will go check some earlier upgrade zip files and see if it's lurking in there. If I find it, is it just a matter of uploading that folder? Or do I have to upload all the files and re-install the site? Cathal, I can wait, and that may actually sound like a winner idea since the Dashboard itself is not vital to me. My problem is that I actually work something like three jobs, so the wait may be longer than a week. This is a busy time of year for me and it's hard to take time to do something as complicated as upgrading.
