Having done thousands of installs this is not something i have ever seen

 Oh boy! I'm special.

.net version 4.0.30319

using an application pool I created myself.  it still uses the NETWORK SERVICE as the security account.  is there anything different that needs configured in the application pool?

Re-read the first post in the thread and combined with the last post gives a few more clues.

1. You got an error that DNN could not connect to a valid database - you need to fix this before continuing
2. You created your own AppPool and permissioned it via Network Service. Does network service have dbo permissions in SQL 2005?
3. Does Network Sevice have all permissions EXCEPT Full Control on your web folder?

2. No.  NETWORK SERVICE is a local account on the Web Server, right (it's entirely possible I am confused here with the permissions)?  SQL Server 2005 resides on a different server, so I did not give the NETWORK SERVICE account SQL 2005 dbo permissions, I created a SQL login for that purpose.  I created a SQL login called dnnadmin, which I gave owner permission of my DotNetNuke database.  I'm specifying my dnnadmin login info for the connection string in web.config

3. I've tried multiple installs now, with varying permissions for the NETWORK SERVICE account.  lately, I've been trying all permissions, including "full control", as I was hoping that would rule out a permissions problem.

thanks for the assistance so far!

Morning... Has anyone found a fix for this? I have been trying to sort this out for nearly 2 days now... Have tried all the suggestions above, plus different frameworks, security and perm settings, different app pools, uninstalled and reinstalled SQL server (2008). I do have a version of SQL server 2005 on here as well so I'm going to try getting rid of that this morning - will let you know how I get on. I have installed DNN many times but never come across this... Was starting to think I was the only person with this issue! Sorry to dilute your 'special' status Steve! ;-) Im running a Dell Precision T3400, 64-bit, Windows 7, IIS7.....

I'm not sure what I finally did to get mine working, it's been a while. I know I did end up creating a new "web site", not a virual directory like the directions say. I was trying so many things I don't know what actually fixed it, so I never posted a solution.
