Hi,

could someone point me in the direction to find out how to shift a DNN database to a different machine without causing issues. I suspect it has something to do with the machine key in web.config, but as yet have not had a lot of success.

Thanks...

If you need to move the DB, just use typical SQL Server practices to move the DB and update the conn string accordingly. The machine key should never change after the first install.

I'm trying to do the same thing more or less. I'm currently running MSDE on Windows Server 2003 Web Edition at 1&1, and I need to upgrade to SQL Server 2000 Standard Edition. I'd also like to separate my database server from my Web server.

I would really appreciate it if someone could look at the steps I'm considering and let me know if I'm missing anything. Here's what I plan to do:

Step 1: Create backup of MSDE database

Step 2: Import database into new SQL Server

Step 3: Stop IIS

Step 4: Update connection string in web.config to point to new DB

Step 5: Start IIS

...and everything works. It can't be that simplistic. Can someone point out what I'm missing? I'd like to make sure that this transition is seemless and it would be great if someone could share their experience with me.

Thanks,
