Please check the physical permissions on the folder you have extract the files.  Make sure all sub filders and files have also the same permissions.  Set only read permissions for the annonymous user, and full permissions for the application pool user.  Also check if  the default.aspx site is the first on your documents list on your IIS, if it  not exist create it at the top.

Please give us information what version, what package, and what OS you are using!

I am sure the installation guide respects the permission settings for the DNN root folder and the subfilder in it incl. the files.  With the physical files I mean the all DNN files and folders, and the permissions in your physical harddisk folders where you have exctracted the dnn files.

I think on XP you have also to add the ASP.NET user full permissions.
Also check if you have set read and excecutation permissions in the ASP.NET setting on the IIS.  You need ASP.Net Framework 2.0 and 3.5 installed on your system (check in software).

please note that starting with DNN 5.2, minimum requirement is SQL server 2005 and ASP.Net 3.5 SP1. DNN 5.3 and above support ASP.Net 4.0 as well.
