in short i have a db with the correct connection set in 2 places in the web.config.
i set auto upgrade to false as well as the wizard option to false.
i ftp the files and modified web.config to my shared hosting and browse
mysite.com/instal/instal.aspx

it rns down a list of steps that are successful ans end with an error on the line that tries to create the mysite portal.

the error is
Error: Thread was being aborted. at DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalController.CreatePortal(String PortalName, UserInfo objAdminUser, String Description, String KeyWords, String TemplatePath, String TemplateFile, String HomeDirectory, String PortalAlias, String ServerPath, String ChildPath, Boolean IsChildPortal) at DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalController.CreatePortal(String PortalName, String FirstName, String LastName, String Username, String Password, String Email, String Description, String KeyWords, String TemplatePath, String TemplateFile, String HomeDirectory, String PortalAlias, String ServerPath, String ChildPath, Boolean IsChildPortal) at DotNetNuke.Services.Upgrade.Upgrade.AddPortal(XmlNode node, Boolean status, Int32 indent)

can anyone help tell me what i am doing wrong?
i am using dnn 5.5

I suggest using custom installation mode instead of auto, this will give you better feedback and reduces the risk of a timeout.

So you ran a "silent installation"?

You shouldn't need to modify the web.config when using the upgrade package however, I believe the portal was not created in the database.
Can you access the database on the shared host and check the portals table?
I suspect  you will find this table is empty and you will have to modify with the correct path
