did you enable TCP/IP protocol for both, client and server component and configure the SQL Server for remote access and your access mode (i.e. accept sql login, if used)?

I am having exactly the same issue as stated hear but i think the original question implies that there is no SQL Server connection, instead its connecting to Database.mdf in the app_data folder. this is my situation. i have a regular shared sever hosting package and currently it does not have SQL support.

1) any ideas
2) i assume that your TCP client surver suggestion would only be valid for a SQL server

i have a very small site and i don't want to invest in SQL for it and ideally i wanted to use this as the data source. i have set up DNN many times but always with a SQL server but i have tried everything to get it to work with just the file.

If you are using the filebased connection, no other application should have a open connection to the database.  So if you have it open a database connection on Visual Studio you can't open it on the IIS on same time.  You have then first disconnect the the connection on VS before you open it on IIS.

Also make sure you have the correct permissions to access the file.

Personaly I preffer the SiteServer connection strings which is also possible on the free MS SQL Server 2005/2008 Express editions.

i have moved on a bit. i have it working fine now in visual studio with the 'personal web server' but as soon as i port it over to a test IIS on the same machine, it jumps back into setup. this must be a permissions issue.

i agree that server connections are best but given the hosting package i have been given this isn't an option. I am looking at the App pool in IIS for permissions but i hope this isn't the issues as again i don't think i can change this on the live site.
