I have previously setup DNN3.x with MSDE2000 with little trouble, on an XP Pro machine.

What I'm wanting to do on a fresh machine, XP Pro SP2 with .NET 2.0 is install SQL Server 2005 Express, then DNN4.0.3 - as a trial / staging system before doing the same on WH4L as a real system.

I want to create at least 2 separate domains - eg, www.myplace.com and www.mystuff.org - and I assume I can set up 2 separate database instances running in SQL Server Express.

Can someone give me a succinct description of what I need to do to get this going? I assume I need to get the connection strings appropriate to the 2 SQL instances, but can I have a common/shared lot of DNN files or will they have to be in quite separate folders?

If this is all in the manual, please point me in the right direction. I guess it's something related to portal template setups?

Thanks - Ian Thomas

To use different databases, you'll need to use different DNN installs. The setup is the same, just make sure the conn strings are pointing to the correct databases.

Understood.
Could I use a single database and distinguish the 2 separate domains - www.myplace.com and www.mystuff.org - and, add subdomains to them? It seems that I should be able to.
I'm not understanding the portal setup stuff in the documentation.

you can have as many portals as you like (and your server can handle) in one installation using same code and database, each with individual address - main domain, sub domain or sub portal. you need to configure name server and IIS, all portal addresses pointing to dnn root and portal aliases are caring to address the correct portal for it.

You should be able to setup multiple DNN instances in one DB by specifying a different qualifier for each. I haven't done this, however, so can't really provide much experience along those lines. Hope this helps. If you have any problems setting it up, we're always here for ya!
